ANSWERS TO THE MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW CAN I BECOME A CATHOLIC?

Through the R.C.I.A. process (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)

HOW DO I BEGIN?

Contact St. Mary Parish Office – 734-241-1644

WHO MAY PARTICIPATE IN THE PROCESS?

1. Persons who have never been baptized in a Christian faith
2. Persons who have been baptized in another Christian faith and are now interested in the Catholic faith.
3. Persons who were baptized in the Catholic faith but not raised as Catholics.
4. Catholics who would like to renew and update their faith.

WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE?

Inquiry is the first stage and is offered all year long. There is no wrong time for asking questions: about being baptized, about coming back to the Church, about finding a spirituality that is right for you, about joining a community of faith.  There might be other questions: how to pray the rosary, why do Catholics kneel, how do we know which prayers to say at Mass, and some deeper questions: Where is God in my life?  What will it mean for me to belong? What do Catholics believe about sin? etc.

Will I be obligated to become a Catholic?
There is no obligation to make any kind of commitment nor is there pressure on anyone to become a Catholic.  We respect the conscience and decision of every inquirer.

RCIA generally meets weekly but varies according to holidays, parish calendars, summer activities, etc.

Topics are many and varied such as:  Who is Jesus Christ, the meaning of life and death, why does God love me, understanding the Bible, prayer, etc.

ADDITIONAL ADULT FORMATION PROGRAMS

COME TO THE WELL - This program is based in the Scriptures and focuses on the Sunday Readings.  It is an opportunity to renew our understanding of the beliefs of our faith and provides for discussion and interaction, for questioning and sharing, on how these particular scripture passages can deepen our awareness of God’s presence and involvement in our ordinary, every day experiences.

Two groups meet weekly—one on Monday morning and another on Wednesday evening. Attendance at one or the other is based on an individual’s availability

Contact:  St. Mary Parish Office on 734-241-1644 for more information or to join a group.
